Will a 12 month loan suit your needs?
If the idea of having to borrow money doesn’t sit well with you, then it’s unlikely that you like the idea of having debt hanging round your neck for years either.
If this sounds familiar, then it might be wise to explore the possibility of 12 month loans, also known as 1 year loans. They will allow you to borrow significant sums of money without the shackles of a long term commitment. However, making sure you get the best deal possible is important, to ensure you keep your total costs to as low as possible.
Once you start to explore the 12 month loan market, you’ll see a range of rates and options available. The ‘headline rate’ is what lenders use as a representative of what you COULD pay if you take out a loan with them but the rate you’ll actually end up with will usually be dependent upon your credit rating and the amount you want to borrow. To help find yourself the cheapest 1 year loan, it’s a good idea to think carefully about your needs before applying.
Ask yourself how much you actually need to borrow. The best rates will vary depending on your loan amount. Usually, the more you borrow, the lower the interest rate… but don’t get sucked into borrowing a larger amount that you don’t really need, just to secure the lowest rate. Work out how much you actually need and base your calculations on the most suitable loan for that amount.
Lenders will usually be pretty picky with who they choose to give their best rates to. They will be looking for near perfect credit history and also for high wage earners. If this doesn’t sound like you, then you probably won’t be offered their headline rate but this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find an affordable 12 month loan.
If you’ve missed payments on credit cards and other loans in the past and your credit history is poorer than you’d like, it might be worth considering looking for 12 month loans designed for those with bad credit. Yes, these will almost certainly be more expensive than others on the market, but these lenders will be more willing to consider you as a customer rather than rejecting you straight away. Too many failed applications can often make a further dent in a less than perfect credit history.
If you think you may have the means to repay your loan early, then make sure you look for loans which allow you the flexibility to do this. Whilst many lenders may offer you the chance to make over payments and repay early, you can sometimes be charged fees for doing so. You may also be charged more for the loan in the first place, so consider carefully if repaying early is actually a realistic prospect before paying extra for it.
